Choosing assisted living for someone you love can bring up questions you never expected to ask. What level of care do they need? What will daily life look like? How close should they be to family? And does the right community need to be in the town they currently call home?

For many families, finding assisted living in Nebraska means looking at more than one community or even more than one city. Nebraska has many small towns where senior care options may be limited. Other families may have relatives spread across the state and decide that moving closer to children or grandchildren makes sense.

At Independence Houses, we provide assisted living and memory care at three Lincoln locations. We know that the people who come through our doors do not all have the same story. Sometimes finding the right place to call home means expanding the map.

The Right Care May Not Be in Your Hometown

Staying in a familiar community can be important, especially for someone who has lived there for many years. Friends may be nearby, along with a church or other meaningful parts of daily life. But location is only one part of choosing assisted living.

Some Nebraska communities simply have fewer senior care options. A town may have senior housing but not offer the level of daily assistance someone needs. Another community may offer assisted living but not memory care. Availability may also be limited when a family needs to move.

In those situations, looking beyond a hometown can provide more choices.

This does not mean location stops mattering. Instead, families can think about location differently. A parent who moves 40 miles from a longtime home might actually end up much closer to an adult child who can visit regularly.

The goal is to find a place that supports your loved one while letting them stay connected to the people who matter.

Start With the Level of Care

Before deciding where to look, it is helpful to understand what kind of support your loved one needs.

Some older adults are still able to live largely on their own. Independent living can offer a community setting without the level of personal care provided in assisted living. Independent living options are therefore designed for a different need than the care we provide at Independence Houses at our three locations in Lincoln.

Assisted living is appropriate when someone needs more help with everyday life but does not necessarily require the level of medical care provided in a nursing home. Memory care provides additional support for people living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

The differences matter because nursing homes and assisted living communities do not provide exactly the same type of care. The same is true of nursing homes compared with memory care.

Rather than starting with a particular type of building, begin with your loved one. Understanding their current needs and how those needs may change can help you determine which type of community makes sense.

Consider Where Family Lives Now

Where someone has lived in the past matters, but so does where their support system lives today.

Many families become spread out over time. Parents may remain in the Nebraska community where they raised their children while their adult children move to Lincoln, Omaha, or elsewhere in the state or beyond.

When a parent begins needing more help, moving closer to family may make everyday connection easier. A shorter drive can make it more realistic to stop by for a visit, attend appointments together, or include a parent in regular family life.

This can be especially important when one adult child is taking on more responsibility for a parent’s care. A move to assisted living is a major transition, but moving to another Nebraska community does not automatically mean becoming less connected. In the right situation, it can do the opposite.

Look at the Full Cost of Care

Cost is another reason to consider more than one community.

Assisted living prices can vary by community and by the level of support a resident needs. What is included in the monthly price can also differ.

That makes it important to compare more than the number at the top of a rate sheet. Ask what services are included and which services may cost extra. Find out how costs could change if your loved one begins needing additional support.

Families should also ask communities directly about payment resources that may apply to their situation. Long term care insurance or veterans benefits may help some individuals, but eligibility and coverage depend on the person and the policy or program.

Looking at several options can give you a clearer understanding of the care available and what it may cost.

Lincoln Can Be Part of a Statewide Search

Lincoln offers a wide range of senior care options, which can make it worth considering when the right care isn’t available closer to home.

The assisted living facilities in Lincoln, Nebraska, vary in size, setting, and the level of support they provide. Some residents may prefer a larger senior living campus. Others feel more comfortable in a smaller residential environment.

The same differences exist among Lincoln assisted living facilities, which is why visiting a community can be so helpful. A list of services can tell you a great deal, but it cannot completely show you what it would feel like for your loved one to live there.

For some Nebraska families, senior living options also make sense because children or other relatives already live in Lincoln. In that case, the move can provide access to appropriate care while making family visits easier.

A Smaller Approach to Assisted Living in Lincoln

At Independence Houses, we take a smaller, residential approach to assisted living in Lincoln, NE.

Our Northview, Coddington, and Mandarin houses are located in Lincoln and provide assisted living and memory care. Rather than operating as one large senior living campus, our houses are designed to feel comfortable and familiar.

We believe care should reflect the person receiving it. Residents come to us with different routines and different levels of independence. Their needs can also change over time.

Our approach to aging in place lets us adjust care as needs increase, so we can continue to meet them safely. This can be particularly important for someone who has already made a significant move from another Nebraska community. Once a resident begins to feel at home, avoiding another unnecessary transition can provide valuable consistency.

This approach is one of the things families can consider when comparing Lincoln, Nebraska, assisted living options. Size matters to some people. Available care matters too. The right environment depends on the individual who will actually be living there.

Think About Life After Move In Day

It is easy to focus so much on choosing a community that you forget to picture what happens after the boxes are unpacked. Think about an ordinary day for your loved one.

Consider how much assistance they will receive and whether they will feel comfortable asking for help. Look at the environment where they will eat meals and spend their time. Think about how easily family can visit.

If your loved one is moving from another part of Nebraska, ask how you will help them maintain connections that are important to them. A new home does not erase the life someone had before moving.

At Independence Houses, we want residents to maintain as much independence as possible while receiving the support they need. Assisted living should not be about taking over someone’s life. It should provide help where help is needed.

Visit the Communities You Are Considering

Research can help you narrow down your options, but an in-person visit can tell you things a website cannot.

Pay attention to how the community feels when you walk inside. Ask how care is determined and what happens when needs change. If memory loss is part of the reason for the move, talk openly about the behaviors or challenges your loved one is experiencing.

It is also worth discussing the move itself. If your loved one will be coming from another Nebraska community, ask what can make the transition easier.

The best choice is not necessarily the largest community or the one closest to the home your loved one is leaving. It is the place where their needs can be met and where they have the opportunity to feel at home.

Finding Assisted Living in Nebraska

There is no single right way to approach assisted living in Nebraska.

For some people, the best option will be right in their hometown. For others, finding the appropriate care may mean looking farther away. A move can provide access to a different level of support while also bringing an older adult closer to the family members who are part of their life today.

If Lincoln becomes part of your search, Independence Houses offers assisted living and memory care in three smaller residential communities. We welcome the opportunity to learn about your loved one, answer your questions and help you decide whether one of our houses could be the right fit.
